Musella lasiocarpa

This is a small banana, reaching only 5 feet at a maximum. It is suckering plant, meaning that it will sprout lots of trunks, and each will some day produce a flower. In the meantime, the foliage is stunning. Unlike some bananas, the foliage of this Musella does not shred in the wind.

What a treat when the enormous golden flower emerges from the lush, bright green banana leaves! The bloom is huge- often 8 inches across. A friend tells me a single bloom lasted for 9 months in her garden- and was visited by butterflies and hummingbirds all throughout the summer.

This plant will live happily in a pot, It does not mind being root bound, and though containing it in a pot will dwarf the size of the leaves, You will still enjoy the full sized flower.
