Hello Friends,

There are some things I love about the Bay Area in February. I love that all the aloes are blooming, and I love the way that plants all over the city that had been starved for water are now full of life. I love the green hillsides. This time of year, every hour of sunshine is precious.

To celebrate the joys of February we are having a big sale. Come and grab some special bargains.

Some Very Cool Plants We Have in Stock Now
Leucadendron salignus 'Winter Red'
One of the easiest to grow of the South African protea-family delicacies, this shrub is deeply pigmented with the colors of brick, salmon and crème brūlée. Its narrow, poised foliage reminds us of a technicolor sci-fi flick from the 60s. We've got great little one-gallons, perfect for winter planting. In the long run it should tolerate quite a bit of summer drought in a sharply drained soil. The secret with plants in the protea family is sunshine, sharp drainage and withholding fertilizer. If you despair of your windy, sunny, sandy backyard, this plant will add a dash of glamour amid the fog.

You may have admired this leucadendron in the gardens in the Guerrero Street medians that we designed. Any plant that can thrive in the middle of four lanes of traffic wins the durability prize.

Deppea splendens 'Cristobal'
We receive special requests for this plant, commonly called "'Golden Fuchsia," all year long, but it is seldom available. This plant is not just rare in our nursery, it may be among the rarest plants we sell. Deppea splendens was collected in the wild in 1981, and the area from which it was collected was later cleared by farmers. It is likely that there are none left in the wild.

This flower on this plant is outstanding. The cluster of blooms dangles from an impossibly thin thread about six inches long. The unusual color combination seals the deal—an unusual red and deep golden yellow. The foliage is just beautiful as well, and best of all this pretty plant will take some shade.

Rhopalostylis sapida - the Nikau Palm
The Nikau is one of the most architectonic palms in our collection. After a few years in the ground, its upright cone of fronds begins to look like a feather duster. Once it forms a trunk, its clean lines, intense green, and verticality make a lush exclamation point. What's more, it revels in the milder half of Bay Area climates (above 26 degrees in winter), enjoying some shade when young and regular irrigation. It loves fog.

The scale is ideal, reaching only 20-30 feet after many decades of growth and spreading out to a slender six feet max. Perfect along driveways, in narrow entry gardens, or planted between shrubs to eventually pop its waving foliage into sunshine.

Check out the young grove at the San Francisco Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park (Strybing). We have oversized five-gallons of this New Zealand native at a great price.
