Echeveria shaviana, E. pulvinata, E. 'Tippy'

There are so many amazing Echeveria in the world. Here are just a few. Echeveria are easy to grow, and some varieties are nearly impossible to kill. They grow happily in pots or on a sunny windowsill. They make great first plants for young gardeners. Just about the only thing they will not tolerate is overly enthusiastic watering. Keep them on the dry side.

We get so excited when the hummingbirds arrive. More species of the aggressive, cute, hovering birds reach our area in spring and summer. As spring progresses the flowers of Echeveria, Dudleya, and Sedum draw hummingbirds to the nectar-rich flowers they hold like wands over their sculpted leaves. It is hard to tell if the hummingbirds chasing each other around the yard are in love or at war, but either way they are fun to watch, and I love having them in the garden.
