We are ecstatic to share with you Daniel Nolan's new book, Dry Gardens: High Style for Low Water Gardens. We will be hosting two events in October, 2018 to celebrate this amazing book.
In 2008, Daniel joined our team, working as a salesperson. During his time at the nursery he became one of the Bay Area's top designers, and produced this gorgeous book! Recently Daniel left our staff to begin working as an independent designer, but he continues to be among our favorite collaborators.
It is always bittersweet to say goodbye to beloved staff members, but we are so proud of the path that Daniel has cut for himself, from joining our staff with more ambition than experience, to becoming a celebrated designer and author.
Below, you'll find some highlights of the amazing work Daniel Nolan did while at Flora Grubb Gardens.
You may remember seeing this modern beauty in Martha Stewart Living a few years back. This was one of Daniel Nolan's first big projects after transitioning to our design team in 2012. The scale and freedom of this project gave Daniel a chance to establish his signature style: breathtaking design in a low-water, minimal maintenance garden.
In San Francisco, where space is at a premium, every nook, from front porch to balcony to a corner of the living room, is an opportunity to add life and a cozy place to relax. Working in the city, Daniel mastered the art of small spaces and container-garden design, both indoor and outdoor.
At one of Daniel's public projects, Clos Pegase Winery, the design of the garden reflects the postmodern spirit of the Michael Graves building with a line of playful dasylirions, and groupings of bold agaves, with olive trees flanking the entry. This strikingly modern dry garden, featuring 19 Chilean wine palms, and composed with low fuel volumes in a fire-prone area, is a fresh take on a winery landscape and is growing into majestic heritage garden.
Check out Daniel's book, Dry Gardens: High Style for Low Water Gardens, for a glorious display of inspiring gardens created by Daniel and some of the top designers and landscape architects in the business today. We can't wait to celebrate with Daniel at the events we will be hosting in October, 2018.
Your Path to a Career in Garden Design?
Launch your career in horticulture at Flora Grubb Gardens, like Daniel did! Daniel knew he wanted a career in garden design, and was looking for just the right opportunity when he joined our staff. "I knew I was in the right place at Flora Grubb Gardens. Working there opened doors for me, and I was getting paid to learn about plants!" Helping customers with their gardens gave Daniel the opportunity to work through garden design challenges every day. His work with customers "gave me the confidence in my designs, and I learned what I like. I was cataloging plant combinations to use later."
