Designing with Palms: By Jason Dewees

Five years in the making, Jason's beautiful, award-winning book from Timber Press offers a wealth of design inspiration and ideas, exquisitely photographed by Caitlin Atkinson and featuring gardens in Hawai`i, South Florida, the Bay Area, Southern California, South Carolina, and the Desert Southwest. Jason shares lessons from some of the best designers working with palms in the United States. Useful information about the palm family and a portfolio of hardy and popular palm species equip designers and gardeners to embrace the power of palms in landscape design. Come into the store to buy a signed copy or order books online through Indybound or Amazon.

"Beautiful, compelling, and scientifically accurate" is how the judges of The American Horticultural Society Book Awards describe DESIGNING WITH PALMS by Jason Dewees. We are proud that Designing with Palms has been awarded the 2019 AHS Book Award.

Both Jason and Caitlin received awards from the California Horticultural Society for Designing with Palms – the Writer’s Award and the Photographer’s Award, respectively.

Jason Dewees shares his expertise in plants, and especially palms, with designers, landscape architects, botanical garden curators, municipalities, and gardeners, always with an eye to design. Jason helps identify and source the best varieties based on the design intention and requirements, growing conditions, and market availability. Contact us to set up a consultation.

Jason worked with Exteriors Landscape Architecture and their clients to choose the right species and the best specimens for a new garden design in a spectacular site overlooking vineyards near Healdsburg, California. He wrote about the garden and the role palms play in it in Designing with Palms.

Jason has been our horticultural go-to person since meeting him several years ago. He not only has become our 'palm guru' but we also often consult with him about succulents, bamboo, Australian and South African plant varieties. His vast expertise makes him an invaluable resource, plus he is always approachable and a delight to work with!
– Helene Morneau & Kris Sunderlage, Exteriors Landscape Architecture

Jason has an artful eye in selecting the perfect palm specimens for his clients’ gardens. We are so pleased with his continued advice and interest in the health and vitality of the numerous palm trees on our Sonoma Wine Country property.
