Huernia zebrina
lifesaver cactus
Succulent in the milkweed family looks like a cactus until you see its summer bloom -- like a shiny red lifesaver centered in a zebra-striped star. A jewel in a pot or a rock-garden setting.

This huernia thrives on neglect, making it one of the easiest garden plants for California. They are drought-tolerant, but this one will need a deep watering every couple weeks in dry months. These succulents will be plump with vibrant green stems during their growth season. It's natural for these same plants to show stress during their dry season, often turning shades of red, orange or brown, giving added seasonal interest to the succulent garden. If you prefer a lush look, watering once dry will keep them plump. Protect from cold winter rain. | |

Notas de cultivo
Frost tender. Protect from temperatures below 38F and bring inside if freezing (32F) is possible.
Growing this plant in extra gritty soil (mixing cactus mix with equal parts pumice) will make this plant more resilient to winter rains. However, best to bring under cover if rain is expected for more than a day during the cool season.
Blooms from late summer through fall.
Interés especial
The flowers smell like rotting meat: beware. They are pollinated by carrion flies in habitat.
Wash sap off skin and keep out of your eyes. It can be irritating to skin and eyes.
