Many leucospermums are from Mediterranean climates of South Africa, so they adapt well to California, particularly along the coast. They appreciate good drainage, but they're somewhat adaptable to heavier soil as long as they're in a sunny spot and watering is infrequent (once established).

Leucospermums will grow and look their best when watered deeply every other week to once a month during summer. With sharp drainage, they will tolerate even more water.

Notas de cultivo

Great in a pot or in reasonably well-drained, low-nutrient soils. If you've got rich clay or other nutrient-rich soil, choose a big pot. If you have sandy or rocky soils, this is one of the most satisfying plants to grow in coastal California and worth a stretch in less frosty inland zones.

Refrain from scratching around the surface of or planting into the soil under and immediately around this plant as it produces specialized cluster roots that enable it to thrive in nutrient-poor soils.

Don't be surprised by a second bloom in early fall.

Interés especial

Hummingbirds are drawn to the flowers.

Leucospermums tend to be easier to grow than related true proteas but more demanding than leucadendrons.
