Rooftop Inspiration From Oliver Gardens
Chotto Matte has a beautiful new rooftop dining garden in San Francisco's Union Square, designed by Oliver Gardens LLC. We were lucky to get a sneak peak during construction, and have photos for your planting inspiration!
Full sun, strong wind, and limited soil depth make rooftops challenging growing environments. Oliver achieved a lush feel with durable, drought tolerant plants from our growing grounds, Grubb and Nadler.
Oliver reviewing the installation of a serene mix of plant colors and textures: variegated Westringia fruticosa 'Morning Light' complements the sculptural rosette of Agave parryi var. truncata. The compact Sempervivum arachnoideum ties into the Westringia's colors and the Agave's form. This shallow-rooted succulent will spread to create a weed-suppressing carpet.
Dasylirion wheeleri and Lomandra longifolia ‘Arctic Frost’ add soft brightness with their grassy texture and pale coloration.
Queen Palms (Syagarus romanzoffiana) and King Palms (Archontophoenix cunninghamiana) add height and a feathery canopy. Their non-invasive root systems are perfect for tight situations.
Oliver consulted with our horticulturalist Jason Dewees: "I found working with Jason to be a total pleasure. His vast and remarkable knowledge of plants is a deep and wonderful resource. He contributed to my project creatively, with helpful insights, and not least to mention logistically."
